What frightens Its maker calls it a short religious horror game: alone on the sea floor in a dive suit with an oxygen gauge, you net fish, sift the silt for things like an old skull and study them in your lab, searching for Eden and the truth about a primordial underwater Adam. Steam notes depictions of bodily disfigurement and implied death.

Content: bodily disfigurement, implied death.

Water Womb World is a free, short horror game by Yames. Alone on the sea floor with a limited supply of oxygen, you catch fish, sift silt for strange objects and take them back to your lab to study, in a search for Eden and the truth about an underwater Adam. It takes about 15 minutes.

About Water Womb World

Water Womb World is a small horror game by the solo developer Yames, first released on itch.io in 2020 and brought to Steam, free, in February 2026 with new music, developer commentary and achievements. Its store line sums it up as Aqua Catholicism: exploring man's original sin under the sea.

You play a researcher of what the game calls Aqua-Edenic studies. On the sea floor you look out through your diving mask in first person, move from screen to screen with arrow buttons, throw nets to catch fish and sift through the silt for what is buried there, while an oxygen gauge runs down beside the view. Back in your lab you refill your tank, study what you found and read entries from a cyber catechism.

The pictures are grainy, dark and tinted blue and red, and the text is calm and devout while the finds grow stranger: an old skull, a dive mask covered in biblical inscriptions, a church interior recalled in a memory. The horror is quiet and religious rather than loud, a feeling that the faith behind the research is leading somewhere you would rather not go. Steam's content note mentions depictions of bodily disfigurement and implied death.

It suits players who like short, strange horror with an odd idea at its centre, and who would rather be unsettled than chased. One sitting is enough to see it through.

Tips

  • Keep an eye on the oxygen gauge on the left and return to the lab before it runs low.
  • Research every object you bring back; the text in the lab carries the story.
  • Mac players whose download will not open can try the itch.io app, as the maker suggests.
