Games Like Resident Evil: Survival Horror to Play Next
Resident Evil is the template for survival horror: explore a dangerous place, count your bullets, solve puzzles with what you carry and decide which monsters are worth a fight. These games keep those rules, from big remakes to small indie games made the old way.

If you want the classic, fixed-camera Resident Evil of the 1990s, start with Tormented Souls and its sequel Tormented Souls 2. Both put Caroline Walker in a sinister mansion-like hospital and then a remote Chilean town, with fixed camera angles, optional tank controls, limited saves and puzzles built from items you combine. Crow Country does the same thing in the style of the original PlayStation: an abandoned theme park in 1990, a small arsenal and monsters in the dark, with an optional mode that turns the fights off.
Signalis is the indie pick for players who loved how tight the early games felt. Its inventory has six slots, bullets are scarce, and the facility you search is full of locked doors and puzzles, but its story is stranger and sadder than anything in Raccoon City.
For the over-the-shoulder Resident Evil of the remakes and Resident Evil 4, play Dead Space. Its remake turns a mining ship into a maze you learn room by room, and its monsters only stop when you cut off their limbs, so every shot counts. Dead Space 2 is faster and more action-led. The Evil Within comes from Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, and plays like a darker cousin of Resident Evil 4 with matches to burn the dead; The Evil Within 2 opens it up into a broken town you scavenge.
Silent Hill 2 is the other pillar of the genre. Its remake keeps the scarce supplies and puzzles but makes the fear personal, a town that reflects one man's guilt. Alone in the Dark (2024) reimagines the game that came before Resident Evil, an asylum full of puzzles and eldritch things, and Hollowbody and Cronos: The New Dawn are recent survival horror games with the same rhythm of scavenging, puzzles and careful fights. The Sinking City 2 brings that rhythm to a flooded 1920s Arkham, with an inventory to manage, shortcuts to open and Lovecraftian creatures in the water.
Smaller indie games keep the formula alive too. Heaven Dust 2 is the most direct: you wake in a research centre overrun by a virus outbreak and work your way out past zombies and mutated fiends, managing an inventory, ammunition and healing items and combining items to solve its puzzles. Night At the Gates of Hell goes back to Italian zombie films in gory PS1-style 3D, with slow dead that only fall to a shot in the head and puzzles between you and the way out. Lamentum turns the mansion into pixel art: a man brings his dying wife to Grau Hill Mansion and finds creatures, traps and cosmic secrets, with a lamp, a few weapons and scarce ammunition.
Three more look straight back to the 1990s. Echoes of the Living, in Early Access, is a zombie outbreak in a fog-bound European town in 1996, played through fixed cameras with every bullet counted. Alisa recreates the look of a PS1 game, tank controls included, in a Victorian mansion stalked by doll-like machines. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is from the era itself, a 2001 entry in the series that came before Resident Evil, with pre-rendered rooms and a flashlight that drives back the creatures of the dark.
The Glass Staircase, from Puppet Combo, is a short homage to PS2 survival horror and Italian zombie films: girls in an old house follow a voice on the intercom until the dead rise, played with fixed cameras and tank controls.
If what you want is the originals themselves, the 1996 Resident Evil and the 1998 Resident Evil 2 were re-released on PC in 2026, fixed cameras, tank controls and all, and have their own pages on this site. Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, the chapter between Resident Evil 3 and 4, is still sold on PlayStation and Xbox in its original form.
If you only try one, play Signalis for the closest feel to the originals, or Dead Space for the closest feel to the modern remakes.
