What frightens Alone at night in a dark house, you look out of the window and see a man standing still in the street. As you move through the rooms, the grainy camcorder image, a television hissing static and the basement in the dark build the sense that he is getting closer, until the ending jumps out at you.

Content: jumpscares, loud sounds.

Alone. Again. is a free, very short first-person horror game by TheRedRoom that you can play in the browser. Home alone at night, you notice a figure standing outside, and the house around you starts to feel less safe with every room.

About Alone. Again.

Alone. Again. is a short-form analogue horror game by the solo maker TheRedRoom, made in Unity and offered on itch.io for whatever you want to pay, free included. It runs in the browser in a build the maker trimmed for the web, and a Windows download is there for those who want the fuller version.

You are alone in a family home at night. Through the front window you can see a quiet tree-lined street, and in the middle of it a man who simply stands there. From there you walk the dark rooms in first person: a living room lit only by a television full of static, hallways, and a basement crowded with shelves.

The fear is slow and simple. The picture is grainy, with the jittery frame rate of an old camcorder, and the house is quiet enough that every sound matters. There is nothing to fight and very little to do but look, and the game uses that to make you dread the next corner. The tagline is all the story it gives away: it is getting closer.

It suits players who want a quick scare between longer games, or who like analog horror that leans on a mood rather than a lore puzzle. Players in the comments mostly mention the ending, which many say made them jump.

Tips

  • Play with headphones in a dark room; the sound does most of the work.
  • The maker says the Windows download is the best way to play if the browser build stutters.
  • Take it slowly and look around each room, the game is short and the mood is the point.
