What frightens Tasi Trianon wakes after a plane crash in the Algerian desert in 1937 with days missing from her memory; her fear grows in the dark and when she sees what lurks there, and ghouls hunt her through caves, ruins and a fortress while she strikes her few matches to see.

Amnesia: Rebirth is a first-person horror adventure from Frictional Games. As Tasi Trianon, you wake in the Algerian desert after a plane crash, with your companions gone and days you cannot remember. With only matches and a lantern, you solve puzzles and hide from creatures while your fear grows in the dark.

About Amnesia: Rebirth

Amnesia: Rebirth is the third Amnesia game from Frictional Games, the Swedish studio behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA. It came out in October 2020 for PC and PlayStation 4, followed by Xbox in 2022 and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.

It is 1937. Tasi Trianon, a draughtswoman on an expedition, survives a plane crash in the desert of Algeria and wakes alone, days later, unsure what happened in between. She follows the trail of her missing companions through caves, ancient ruins and a colonial fortress, retracing her own steps and the decisions she cannot remember making.

It plays like earlier Amnesia games. You explore in first person, open doors and move objects with the mouse, and solve physical puzzles. There is no way to fight. Darkness and frightening sights raise your fear, shown on screen, and if it grows too high Tasi loses control; light from a scarce supply of matches and a lantern keeps it down. The creatures that hunt you have to be avoided.

Its story is more personal than the first game's, tied to Tasi's family and her loss, and it ends in places stranger than the desert. An Adventure Mode tones down the threat for players who want the story without the hunting. It suits fans of Frictional's earlier games and anyone who likes slow, story-led horror.

How to play Amnesia: Rebirth

  1. Pick the normal mode, or Adventure Mode for a less threatening play.
  2. Explore in first person, picking up and dragging objects with the mouse to open the way.
  3. Strike matches and light the lantern to see and keep Tasi's fear down; use them sparingly.
  4. When a creature is near, hide, keep quiet and wait or slip away; you cannot fight.
  5. Read notes and follow Tasi's memories to retrace the expedition's path.

Tips

  • Light candles and lamps with matches where you can; fixed light saves your supplies.
  • Do not look at the creatures for long; it makes your fear climb.
  • Look for the oil and matches tucked into corners and crates as you explore.
  • If fear takes over, move toward light to calm Tasi.
