What frightens A detective is sent into a killer's twisted mind through mind-space technology, where gothic grounds in fog, cells and caves hide clawed, burning-chested creatures and a hooded figure with a blade, faced with limited ammunition.

Content: violence, gore.

Connection: The Nightmare Within is a survival horror game by Dragon Level, inspired by Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Alone in the Dark. Detective Stone enters a killer's mind to uncover a conspiracy, fighting monsters and solving puzzles, and you choose between a classic fixed camera and an over-the-shoulder view.

About Connection: The Nightmare Within

Connection: The Nightmare Within is made and published by Dragon Level, a small two-person team, and came out on Steam for Windows in October 2024. Its makers name Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Alone in the Dark as its inspiration.

You play Detective Stone, working the strangest case of his career. Using mind-space technology, he steps into the twisted mind of the man he is hunting to gather clues. What he finds there is a nightmare shaped like the real world gone wrong: a gothic building in fog and lamplight, a prison yard, caves of red rock, and creatures the files call scrapers, crawling and humanoid things with a burning glow in their chests. A hooded figure with red eyes and a great blade stalks the grounds.

It plays as classic survival horror: explore, read notes, fight with the weapons you find while watching your ammunition, and solve puzzles, including a late maze. Its best-known feature is the camera. You can play the whole game in a fixed-camera mode, with pre-set angles that cut as you move, as in the first Resident Evil games, or switch to a modern over-the-shoulder view. Players note that aiming is harder with the fixed cameras.

On Steam it is rated Very Positive. Players praise its polish, graphics and voice acting, and find the bosses the weakest part. A first play takes about three to five hours. There is a free demo on itch.io. It suits players who want a modern-looking game with the old survival horror camera.

How to play Connection: The Nightmare Within

  3. Explore each area of the killer's mind and read the notes and sketches you find.
  4. Fight the creatures with your weapons, but keep an eye on your ammunition.
  5. Solve the puzzles that block your way and face the bosses at the end of each part.

Tips

  • If aiming feels awkward in fixed-camera mode, try over the shoulder for fights: the camera can be changed.
  • Read the field sketches of the scrapers: they tell you each creature's weak spot.
  • Do not waste shots on enemies you can walk around.
