What frightens You wander huge, silent liminal spaces with no guide: endless tiled pools lit by an artificial glow, a suburb of identical houses whose hallways loop at dusk, empty children's playrooms and a hotel unstuck in time. Nothing attacks, but the store promises an unseen presence at the edges of your awareness, and the stillness and getting lost do the rest.

Content: easy to get lost; no directions, dreamlike disorientation.

A first-person exploration game set in vast liminal spaces from the Backrooms tradition. Each map, from the Dreampools to Eternal Suburbia, Playrooms, a Liminal Hotel and a Dead Mall, is a huge empty place to find your own way through, with something always just out of sight.

About Dreamcore

Dreamcore is a first-person exploration game by Montraluz, released on Steam in January 2025 and expanded with new maps since. It calls itself a psychological exploration game and is built from the visual language of liminal spaces and the Backrooms: places that feel familiar, empty and wrong.

Each map stands alone. The Dreampools are a maze of endless tiled pools with only the drip of water and your own footsteps. Eternal Suburbia is a sunny neighbourhood of identical houses whose interiors loop into themselves, with vintage jazz by day and the question of whether you are alone at dusk. The Playrooms strip children's play areas of people and sound; the Liminal Hotel is a take on the Backrooms meme Level 188, floor after floor; and the Dead Mall turns an old shopping plaza, arcade and car park uncanny.

There are no guides and no directions; each level has a light goal and you find the way by observation. Nothing chases you. The fear is the scale, the silence and the feeling of being watched, and players note it is very easy to get lost.

It suits players who loved Pools and Backrooms videos and want more of that quiet unease. Those who want monsters, a story or quick progress will find it slow.

How to play Dreamcore

  1. Buy it on Steam for Windows.
  2. Choose a map; each one is a standalone level.
  3. Explore in first person and look for the subtle clues that point the way on.
  4. Find each level's goal to reach its end.
  5. Come back as new maps are added; owners get them free.

Tips

  • Wear headphones; sound is often the only hint of where to go.
  • Pick landmarks and keep track of them; many rooms are near copies of each other.
  • Set aside time; some maps take hours to work out.
  • If a level feels endless, look up and down as well as ahead.
