What frightens You wander empty, too-real memories of children's play places, water parks and basements where doors loop back on themselves. At first something breathes behind the walls when you stand still; later a figure that should not exist chases you through decaying halls and down endless slides, and fumbling a puzzle when it matters lets it close in.

Content: chase sequences, disturbing imagery.

A first-person psychological horror puzzle game inspired by the Backrooms. You move through liminal spaces made of memory, from an empty play place to a water park, grabbing and placing light to open the way, while something not human waits and later chases you.

About Subliminal

Subliminal is a first-person horror game by Accidental Studios, released on Steam in March 2026 and built in Unreal Engine 5. Its store page names the Backrooms urban legend as its inspiration, and its spaces are the nostalgic, empty kind that legend made famous: a children's play place with tube slides and ball pits, a water park, concrete basements and car parks.

Its central idea is that light is a physical thing. You pull fixtures from the ceiling, carry them, and place or aim them to open doors, cast shadows and reveal paths; change the lighting of a room and the room itself may change. Puzzles are built on that and on perspective, and a light placed in the wrong spot can send you back to the start.

Each place is a fragment of a memory, and the deeper you go the less stable they become. Slides lead where they should not, TV screens carry you between memories and doors loop back. At first you only hear breathing when you stand still or sense something around a corner; later a figure that is not human chases you through the halls, and hesitating at a puzzle can let it close in.

Players praise its looks and atmosphere and split over its length and puzzles. It suits fans of liminal-space horror and of puzzle games with real dread.

Tips

  • Experiment with where you place each light before committing; a bad spot can cost progress.
  • Stand still and listen now and then; sound tells you when you are not alone.
  • Look for TVs and slides; they often lead to the next memory.
  • Play with headphones and the lights off.
