Among Ashes is by Rat Cliff Games, released on Steam in December 2024. Its idea is a game within a game: you play a first-person horror game inside another first-person horror game.

It is a stormy night in the early 2000s. Your friend has sent you a link to a horror game he found online, Night Call. On your old computer you play it: a retro-styled manor of labyrinthine halls where you explore, solve puzzles and fight off the monsters that have infested it. But as you play, strange things start happening in your apartment. The entities latched onto Night Call are reaching out.

You move between the two layers: the low-fi game on the screen and your dim, snowy-windowed apartment around it, where you dig into the mystery of the game and its enigmatic creator. The store warns of violence, gore and themes of abuse and suicide.

It suits players who like haunted-media horror and stories about cursed games, in the spirit of creepypasta and analog horror.

How to play Among Ashes
