About KinitoPET

KinitoPET was made by troy_en and released on Steam in January 2024. It takes place almost entirely on a recreation of an early 2000s computer desktop, complete with a clock, an e-mail client, a web browser and the familiar green hill wallpaper.

On that desktop lives Kinito, a pink virtual pet assistant in the spirit of the helpers bundled with software at the turn of the century. Its store page promises that Kinito can walk, talk, browse, adapt and play games, and invites you into its wonderful world of fun. It asks your name, reads you storybooks, shows you around the web and wants to know everything about you.

The horror is in how far that goes. Kinito is capable of things you would never expect of a desktop helper, and the game is built to make you doubt where it ends and your own machine begins. It plays with the window you are looking at as much as with what is in it, and much of its effect depends on not knowing what comes next.

The store warns of upsetting imagery, flashing lights and distressing computer effects. It suits players who liked the meta horror of Doki Doki Literature Club or Pony Island and anyone who grew up with a talking assistant on the family computer.

How to play KinitoPET

1. Buy it on Steam for Windows and start the game.
2. Answer Kinito's questions and type what it asks for in its boxes.
3. Use the simulated desktop: open the browser, e-mail and programs Kinito shows you.
4. Play the games and activities Kinito offers and follow where it leads.

Tips

• Go in knowing as little as possible; the surprises are the point.
• Play in a quiet room with sound on; much of the unease is in Kinito's voice and the desktop's noises.
• Read the store's content warning first if flashing lights or distressing screen effects are a problem for you.
