Mistrick is a short RPG Maker horror game by Hatoge, made for the Yandere Jam 2022. John Blanc, a narcissistic convict, wakes in a strange pocket dimension where his old cell neighbour, the executed serial killer Chase Colt, tries to keep him for good. It has three endings and 13 ways to die, and plays free in the browser.

About Mistrick

Mistrick is a horror adventure by the solo maker Hatoge, made in a month with RPG Maker for the Yandere Jam 2022. It is a spin-off of Hatoge's earlier game Misfiction, whose events are retold in an opening cutscene, so it can be played on its own. Volunteer translators have brought it to German, Russian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Italian and Chinese.

John Blanc is a narcissistic convict who finds himself in a strange pocket dimension. Waiting for him is Chase Colt, his former cell neighbour and an executed serial killer, who greets him warmly and tells him he has already died. That turns out to be a malicious lie to keep John there. The question is whether John can find the way out, or dies to one of the many tricks of this wicked place.

You walk John through a top-down pixel world, talk to Chase and to Lola, solve puzzles and pick your way past traps. One wrong move can end in one of 13 deaths, each with its own bad end screen. Both Lola and Chase drop hints in their dialogue, and the maker offers a walkthrough for anyone stuck.

The horror sits in the company you keep: a smiling killer who will not let you go, eyes and mouths on the floor, blood and talk of murder and kidnapping, cut with dark humour. It takes 40 to 60 minutes and has three endings. It plays free in the browser on itch.io, or as a Windows or Android download, with a keyboard only. It suits players of short RPG Maker horror with a yandere bent, like Angels of Death or Hatoge's own Line 88.

How to play Mistrick

  1. Open the game's itch.io page and press Run game, or download the Windows or Android version.
  2. Use the keyboard to move John and interact; the game cannot be played with a mouse alone.
  3. Explore the pocket dimension, talk to Chase and Lola, and listen to their hints.
  4. Solve the puzzles that block your way, and save often: many choices end in a bad end.
  5. Play again to find all three endings and the 13 ways to die.

Tips

  • Skip the intro cutscene if you plan to play Misfiction first: it retells that game's story.
  • Lola and Chase hint at puzzle answers in their dialogue; read them closely.
  • If you get stuck, the maker's walkthrough is a free download on the itch.io page.
