A free, short Halloween adventure. Amelia, a maid in a pumpkin hat, loses her mistress Charlotte while trick-or-treating at a cursed mansion and must explore it, solve light puzzles and avoid its many bad ends to find her again.

About Trick & Treat

Trick & Treat is a free top-down adventure from Rabbiton, released on Steam in September 2016 for Windows. The young witch Charlotte and her maid Amelia go out trick-or-treating on Halloween Eve and decide to call at a cursed mansion. Before Amelia understands what is happening, she is alone in the huge house.

You play Amelia, the Pumpkin Maid. You walk the rooms of the mansion, talk to what lives there, pick up items and solve puzzles that the maker says are not hard. The house has ghosts and dolls, and a past that you uncover as you go.

The maker calls it a light-hearted Halloween adventure with some horror elements, romance and a happy ending. It is not built to terrify, but it does have blood, deaths and jumpscares: there are nine dead ends, and several endings on top of those, with a hidden extra room once you reach the Normal or True end and a new outfit for a second run.

At about 90 minutes it fits into one evening, and it suits players who want something spooky and seasonal rather than frightening. Rabbiton later made a remake of it, sold separately on Steam.

How to play Trick & Treat

  1. Start a new game and follow Charlotte and Amelia out on Halloween Eve.
  2. Once inside the mansion, walk Amelia through its rooms with the keyboard and examine anything that stands out.
  3. Collect items and use them to solve the puzzles that open new parts of the house.
  4. Choose carefully when the game asks you to, since wrong choices lead to dead ends.
  5. Finish once, then play again for the other endings and the hidden extra room.

Tips

  • Save often, because there are nine dead ends waiting for careless choices.
  • Run the game from your Steam library, as the maker asks, so achievements unlock.
  • Do not press F12 for screenshots; the maker warns it resets the game to the title screen.
