Clay-Scape! was made by colorbomb, a maker of room escape games, as an entry to Scream Jam 2021, where it placed 6th overall and 3rd for aesthetics. It runs in the browser on its itch.io page, and passed 10,000 plays within weeks of release; the maker has since moved the inventory and added small updates.

It looks like stop-motion television for children: a red clay room with a purple cupboard, a wooden floor of lolly sticks, a yellow clay man, a birdcage and a horse painted against a sunny wall. You click around each view, pick up what you can, inspect items in the inventory with the magnifying glass and combine them to open the next part of the house. The maker rates its difficulty 4 out of 5.

The page greets you with a warning: the colourful clay might be hiding something sinister underneath, and the game contains intense scenes with claymation violence and gore. In the comments the maker is plain about not setting out to make a real horror game and that there are only a few minor jump scares. What players remember is the contrast, a bright and friendly space that slowly feels wrong, which several compare to Don't Hug Me I'm Scared.

It suits escape-room players who like a grisly turn more than constant fear, and anyone who wants a short, polished puzzle game they can play in a browser tab in about an hour.

How to play Clay-Scape!

1. Open Clay-Scape! on itch.io and press Run game; it can take a while to load.
2. Use the blue button in the bottom right corner for full screen.
3. Click around each clay room to look closer and pick things up.
4. Select an item and click the magnifying glass to inspect it; many clues are found this way.
5. Use and combine items to open the way out of each room.

Tips

• If you are stuck, inspect every item in your inventory with the magnifying glass, as the maker suggests.
• Write down numbers and symbols you see; they are often codes for later.
• Give the game time to load in the browser before clicking.
• Expect at least one jump scare when you hand over certain items.
