What frightens You wake locked in a cold, dark cell where a masked serial killer holds you; the walls are smeared with red, the floor has dead rats, and notes left by his earlier victims tell what happened to them, while you search the cell, boiler room, storage room and locker room for a way out before he comes back.

Content: gore, jumpscares.

Killer Escape is a free point-and-click horror escape game by Psionic, released on Newgrounds in 2012 and still playable in the browser. A masked serial killer has locked you in a dark cell, and you search it and the rooms beyond for tools, keys and the notes of earlier victims to get out before he comes back.

About Killer Escape

Killer Escape is a Flash game by the Newgrounds artist Psionic (Psionic3D), the maker of Ghostscape, released in December 2012. It took Daily 4th Place, was front-paged in January 2013, and Newgrounds still runs it in the browser for free.

In the maker's words it is a point-and-click escape adventure set in a cold dark cell where a mysterious serial killer is holding you, and the task is simple: escape. A short scene introduces your captor, a man in a pale mask and a red coat, before he leaves you alone. From there you look around the cell, then the boiler room, storage room and locker room, taking what earlier prisoners hid and solving valve, gauge and code puzzles. Some items, such as the fuses and notes, are in different places each time you play, and there are medals and hidden spider webs to find.

The horror is in the setting and the story told through it. JayIsGames' review describes red gunk and desperate messages on the walls, shackles and dead rats, and notes that hint at what the killer did to the people before you, and warns of one serious scare. It praised the tight pacing and tension, and found the puzzles a little repetitive, with a lot of valve turning.

Two sequels followed on Newgrounds: Killer Escape 2 in 2013 and Killer Escape 3 in 2014. The first suits players who like escape rooms with a grim, gory edge more than chases.

How to play Killer Escape

  1. Open Killer Escape on Newgrounds and press play; it runs in the browser through Newgrounds' Flash player.
  2. Watch the opening scene, then click the bar at the top to learn how the inventory works.
  3. Move the mouse over the cell; click wherever text appears under the pointer to look closer or take things.
  4. Open the inventory with the arrow at the top, pick an item, then click where you want to use it.
  5. Read every note you find, solve the valve and code puzzles, and work your way through the basement rooms to the exit.

Tips

  • Read the notes closely: besides the story, some carry small clues about where things are hidden.
  • Look into everything, even the unpleasant things on the floor; earlier prisoners hid useful items in odd places.
  • Fuses and notes move between plays, so a walkthrough's locations may not match your game.
  • You can finish without every note, but you score more for finding them and for finishing quickly.
