What frightens After months shut in your apartment you step out into a city twisted by a disease, its places and people turned into a body-horror nightmare; in VR you creep through tight, claustrophobic rooms, reach out to touch grotesque things and fight them off with a few guns and scarce resources.

Content: gore, body horror, violence.

Organ Quarter is a VR-only survival horror game by Outer Brain Studios, made in homage to the slow, methodical survival horror of the 1990s. After weeks of isolation you go out into a city infected by a disease, solve spatial puzzles with your hands and fight grotesque beings with scarce resources.

About Organ Quarter

Organ Quarter is a survival horror game for VR headsets by Outer Brain Studios, released on Steam for PC VR in October 2017. A version published by AMATA came to PlayStation VR2 and Meta Quest in 2023. There is no flat-screen mode: on Steam it is marked VR Only.

The story begins with weeks and months of isolation in your apartment. When you leave, the city has changed. A disease, one that may or may not have a motive, has infected its places and its people, and the streets have become a wasteland of surreal puzzles and grotesque beings. You go into the heart of the city to learn what twisted it.

The makers describe it as a long-form horror adventure rather than a wave shooter or a walking simulator. Levels are intricately connected, there are guns and tools to use, and you have to manage resources the way older survival horror games asked you to. Puzzles are spatial and physical and are built around hand-tracked controllers.

The fear comes from closeness. The game is designed to push you into tight, claustrophobic spaces and to make you get up close to its monsters, some of which may not be hostile. It suits players who liked the slow exploration and backtracking of 1990s survival horror and want that in a headset.

How to play Organ Quarter

  1. Buy it on Steam for a SteamVR headset, on the Meta Quest store, or on the PlayStation Store for PS VR2.
  2. Play standing or in room scale with tracked motion controllers; there is no flat-screen mode.
  3. Leave the apartment and explore the connected levels of the city.
  4. Pick up weapons, ammunition and tools, and manage what you carry.
  5. Solve the spatial puzzles with your hands to open the way deeper into the city.

Tips

  • Treat ammunition as scarce and avoid fights you do not need.
  • Look closely at rooms you have passed through: the levels connect, and puzzles often send you back.
  • Not every creature attacks, so watch before you shoot.
