What frightens Wyatt's parents gave him the Sorrowvirus, so each time he dies he wakes in Purgatory, a liminal place built from memories, dreams and nightmares, and they let him die over and over for their research. You walk Purgatory's decaying corridors against time, and each time you return the dialogue changes, the places warp and it grows harder.

Content: death, suicide and euthanasia themes, strong language.

The Sorrowvirus is a first-person story of Purgatory from the Faceless universe. Wyatt Heyll, kept alive by a virus that sends him back from death again and again, walks a place built from his memories and nightmares, and over four runs you decide whether he is set free.

About The Sorrowvirus

Wyatt Heyll has been ill since childhood, and his parents made a desperate choice: they gave him the Sorrowvirus. It keeps its host from passing into the afterlife. When Wyatt dies he wakes in Purgatory, a liminal place made of memories, dreams and nightmares, and then returns to the living, sicker each time. His parents let him die, over and over, in the name of research and profit.

You walk Purgatory with him in first person, through hospital rooms, decaying corridors and memorials to the son his parents call their magnum opus. Time works strangely there: you track it by finding grandfather clocks, and one run lasts roughly 45 to 60 minutes with no save points.

The game remembers each ending you reach. When you come back, something has shifted: lines of dialogue change, places warp, and it grows harder. There are four endings, and all four runs are needed to see the whole story. The fear comes from where you are and why, and from the things that reach through the walls, more than from a monster chasing you.

The Sorrowvirus was released in 2020 by WATCHMAKER, the studio of Adam Sklar, as a short story from the world of the planned game Faceless, with Wyatt voiced by YouTuber 8-BitRyan. The store warns of death, suicide, euthanasia and strong language. It suits players who like story-led, replayable psychological horror.

How to play The Sorrowvirus

  2. Explore Purgatory in first person and read and listen to what you find.
  3. Look for the grandfather clocks to keep track of how much time you have.
  4. Reach an ending, then start again: the world changes on each return.
  5. Play all four runs to see the whole story and its four endings.

Tips

  • There are no save points in a run, so start when you have an hour free.
  • After the first run, look for the wristwatch the store mentions if you want to explore without watching the clocks.
  • Pay attention to what changes between runs; new dialogue points toward the other endings.
  • Use headphones; the music and voice acting carry much of it.
