What frightens You wake as patient no. 6079 in the Greenwater Institute with no memory of who you are, and walk back through your memories of derelict towns, run-down motels and swamps in the American South, while dark visions make you doubt your own mind and only the doctor's medication keeps them away.

Content: blood, violence, strong language.

A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a VR horror mystery by Wolf & Wood set in the American Deep South. You play patient no. 6079 at the Greenwater Institute and relive your memories, through motels, derelict towns and swamps, to find out what you did to end up there.

About A Chair in a Room: Greenwater

A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a horror game for VR headsets by Wolf & Wood, released on Steam in 2016 after starting as a free demo in 2014. It came to PlayStation VR in April 2019 and is also sold on Meta's store for Rift and Link PC VR. It cannot be played without a headset: Steam marks it VR Only.

After a calibration room to settle into VR, you call an elevator and wake as patient no. 6079 in the Greenwater Institute. You do not remember who you are or what you did to be there. Dark visions call your lucidity into question, and only the doctor's supply of medication holds back the ones who want to haunt you.

The story draws on Southern Gothic. You pass through derelict towns, run-down motels and murky, decaying swamps, picking up and looking at objects, reading clues and piecing together an investigation into institutional corruption, religious immorality and murder. Most of it is told through the places themselves rather than through fights.

The story is split into six chapters of about 20 to 30 minutes, so it can be played in short sessions. It suits players who want a slow, unsettling story in VR more than combat.

How to play A Chair in a Room: Greenwater

  1. Buy it on Steam for a SteamVR or Rift headset, on Meta's store for Rift and Link PC VR, or on the PlayStation Store for PS VR on PS4.
  2. Set yourself up in the calibration room, choose a locomotion option, then call the elevator to begin.
  3. Explore each place and pick up objects to look at them closely; papers and photos hold the clues.
  4. Piece the clues together to move through your memories, one chapter at a time.

Is it on Meta Quest?

Meta's store sells it as a PC VR game for Rift and Link, so a Quest needs to be connected to a PC; there is no standalone Quest version listed.
