What frightens A cult member has been possessed by the goat demon Azazel, and you and up to three other cultists have to finish a banishment ritual in the dark while the possessed chases you, growing faster and angrier and spawning fiends as you go. Get caught and you are dragged away; your only defence is a UV flashlight.

Content: jumpscares, loud sounds, flashing lights, demonic imagery.

A co-op horror game for one to four players. As cult members you race to find ritual items and perform a banishment on dark, themed maps while a cultist possessed by the demon Azazel and her fiends hunt you, armed with nothing but UV flashlights.

About DEVOUR

DEVOUR is a co-op horror game by the British studio Straight Back Games, released on Steam for Windows and Mac in January 2021. You play members of a cult whose ritual has gone wrong: someone has been possessed by Azazel, a goat demon, and your group has to break its hold before it takes all of you.

Each map is its own place, with its own form of the possessed, its own fiends and its own ritual. The basic job stays the same: search the area for the key items the banishment needs, some of which are alive and do not want to be caught, bring them to the ritual site and complete it. Locked doors, item locations and spawns change every game, so the route is never fixed.

The possessed roams the map looking for you, and the further you get, the faster and angrier it becomes and the more fiends it spawns. A UV flashlight is your only means of defence, and it holds things off only briefly. Positional voice chat means you hear teammates' panic from wherever they are, and a downed player has to be revived.

Runs earn experience, a Cult Rank and tokens for perks, and a Nightmare mode raises the difficulty further. The whole game can also be played in VR at no extra cost. It suits groups of friends who want frantic, loud scares and a puzzle of coordination; alone it is very hard.

How to play DEVOUR

  1. Host or join a lobby of up to four players and choose a map and difficulty.
  2. Explore the map with your flashlight to find the ritual items it needs, such as items you must collect, carry or catch.
  3. Bring the items to the ritual site and complete each step of the banishment.
  4. Use the UV flashlight to drive back the possessed and her fiends when they get close, and revive teammates who go down.
  5. Finish the ritual before the possessed overwhelms the team.

Tips

  • Split up to search, but agree on who carries items to the ritual.
  • Call out the possessed's position over voice chat; it gets faster as you progress.
  • Save your UV light for when you need to escape, not to fight.
  • Learn each map's layout on lower difficulty before trying Nightmare.
