Demonologist is made by Clock Wizard Games and built in Unreal Engine 5. It entered early access on Steam in March 2023 and was fully released on 25 September 2023. It is a PC game, sold only on Steam.

From your safe house you choose a cursed location and head in alone or with up to three friends. Locations unlock as you level up: an abandoned house, a farm house, a hospital, an asylum called Bedlam, a haunted school, a funeral home, a cursed chapel and more. Inside you search for signs of the spirit with your equipment, such as EMF level 5 readings, fingerprints, freezing temperatures, ectoplasm stains and spirit box responses, and match them to the spirit types in your journal.

The horror comes from what the place does back. Events and ghosts are random each time, and the spirit listens: you can talk to it, and what you say can make the place react, even open a hidden door. The spirit can attack, and the team has to work out what it is and perform the exorcism before it kills them.

It plays in the same way as other evidence-based ghost hunts and stands out for its dark, detailed locations and its focus on exorcism. Money earned buys gear, upgrades to your safe house and even a pet. It suits groups of friends who like learning a ghost's rules together and screaming when they are broken.

How to play Demonologist

1. Pick a cursed location from your safe house and invite up to three friends, or go alone.
2. Take equipment in and search the building for the room where the spirit is strongest.
3. Collect evidence such as EMF readings, fingerprints, freezing temperatures and spirit box answers.
4. Compare the evidence with the spirit types in your journal to identify what you face.
5. Perform the exorcism, or leave before the spirit kills the team.

Tips

• Split the team so evidence comes in faster, but keep in touch.
• Be careful what you say near the spirit; it reacts to your words.
• Mark ruled-out evidence in your journal to narrow the spirit down quickly.
• Spend early earnings on equipment before upgrading your safe house.
