What frightens You go back into the Backrooms to find agents who never returned, while seven entities such as the Smiler, the Hound and the Skin Stealer hunt by their own senses and rules; they hear what you say on voice chat, light is scarce, and blackouts cut even the radios.
Content: uses your microphone (voice chat built in, optional), online play.
Backrooms: Extractions is a co-op horror game for one to six players from Headlight Studio. As field agents you search shifting Backrooms levels for lost teams, film the entities that hunt you and hold out until extraction, knowing any gear you carry is lost if you do not make it out.
About Backrooms: Extractions
Backrooms: Extractions is an Early Access co-op horror game by Headlight Studio, released on Steam in April 2025. You play field agents of the M.E.G. sent back into the Backrooms, the endless liminal rooms of internet legend, to rescue the people who went in before you and never came back.
Every deployment is an operation. You track lost agents with a detector and your PDA, place a beacon, send the data that opens the extraction window, and then survive until it opens. Seven levels are available, from the yellow Lobby to Utility Halls, The Suburbs, Attic Floorboards and Fun, and missions, loot and entity behaviour change between runs. Your camera scans for unstable elements that form each level's puzzle and lets you film entities long enough to complete their dossiers.
The fear comes from what hunts you and from how little you can see. Seven entities, including the Smiler, the Wretch, the Hound, the Skin Stealer and the Partygoer, each have their own senses and rules. Voice chat is built in and the entities listen, so shouting for help can bring them to you. The game is shown as found-footage bodycam video, and glowsticks give light the entities barely notice.
It adds stakes that most Backrooms games lack: gear you bring in is lost if you die, while your rank and storage carry over between runs. It suits groups who liked Escape the Backrooms or Lethal Company and want an extraction loop. There is also an Endless Loop mode of escalating levels.
How to play Backrooms: Extractions
- Pick your loadout in the LAB, knowing anything you carry can be lost.
- Deploy alone or with up to five friends and follow the detector and PDA signals to the lost agents.
- Scan with your camera to find the unstable elements that solve the level, and film entities to fill the Entity Registry.
- Place your beacon and transmit the data to open the extraction window.
- Hold out until extraction, then spend your pay on new tools and climb the M.E.G. ranks.

Tips
- Read each entity's entry in the Entity Registry; each one reacts to different senses.
- Keep your voice down near entities, since they can hear voice chat.
- Use glowsticks instead of bright light when you can; the entities barely notice them.
- Mark safe paths with the paint gun so the crew can find its way back.
- Bring only what you can afford to lose until you know a level.
Questions
Can you play Backrooms: Extractions alone?

Is Backrooms: Extractions finished?
It is in Early Access on Steam. Two more levels, Black Lake and The Office, are announced.
