Grow carrots with friends while cryptids prowl the field.

What frightens: While you plant and water carrots on a sunny farm, a pale, long-limbed snatcher creeps around the field hungry for carrots and blood, a mothman attacks without warning at night, and scarecrows stalk you from just outside your view, moving only a little while you can see them.

Content: sudden attacks, blood, online chat with strangers.

Cryptid Farm is an online multiplayer farming game with a horror twist by FistFlame. Players share one farm, planting and watering crops to earn money and upgrades, while a snatcher, a mothman and scarecrows hunt them. The free browser version plays on this page, and a fuller paid version is on Steam.

About Cryptid Farm

Cryptid Farm began in 2019 as a small project by FistFlame, who uploaded it to itch.io in 2020 and has updated it since. The browser version on this page is free; a larger version of the game was released on Steam in October 2024.

On the surface it is a gentle farming game. You plant carrots, hold Space to water them, harvest and sell, then spend the money on upgrades and new seeds such as strawberries. Everyone who joins a room works the same farm, so you see other players' farmers around you and can talk in the chat.

The farm is not safe. A pale creature called the snatcher wanders the field and wants your carrots and your blood. At night the mothman appears and attacks suddenly, so you need to be ready to sprint away, and if you see him in daylight the maker advises you to run. Scarecrows give chase if you get too close, edging forward whenever you look away. Learning how each one behaves is the key to keeping your farm, and yourself, alive.

The first player to join a room is its host and must keep the browser tab in focus or the game slows down for everyone. Public and private rooms are listed in a server browser, and the host can kick or ban players. It suits groups of friends who like a cosy game that keeps them on edge.

How to play Cryptid Farm

  1. Join a public room from the server browser, or create a private room and share its name with friends.
  2. Move with the arrow keys and press F to plant carrots in the soil.
  3. Hold Space to water your crops, then harvest and sell them for money.
  4. Press G to buy upgrades and new crops, and R to switch between the crops in your inventory.
  5. Watch for the snatcher, the mothman and the scarecrows, and press Shift to sprint away when they come for you.

Tips

  • Keep your watering can full so you are not stuck at the edge of the field when something appears.
  • At night stay close to an escape route; the mothman strikes suddenly.
  • Do not walk right up to a scarecrow; it chases anyone who comes too close.
  • If you are hosting, keep the game's browser tab in focus so the room does not slow down.

Questions

Is Cryptid Farm multiplayer?

Yes. Players join online rooms and share one farm. It can also be played alone.

Is Cryptid Farm free?

The browser version on itch.io and this page is free. The full game on Steam is paid.

What is the difference between the browser and Steam versions?

The browser version is the free original. The Steam version, released in 2024, offers eight crops, a variety of creatures and unpredictable events, and rooms for up to 16 players.

Why is the game running slowly?

The first player in a room is the host. If the host tabs away from the game, it slows down for everyone; the maker suggests making a new room.
