Content: violence, gore, suicide themes, jumpscares.

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is Koei Tecmo's full remake of the 2003 Japanese ghost horror game. Twin sisters Mio and Mayu are lost in an abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits, and Mio must find her sister and a way out, fighting the dead with the Camera Obscura.

About FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE

Crimson Butterfly, also known as Project Zero II, first came out in 2003 as the second game in the Fatal Frame series. This full remake by Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo was released in March 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, with a demo whose save carries over.

Twin sisters Mio and Mayu wander into a village that has been abandoned for years, where night never ends. Its ghosts are looking for twins: long ago the village held a ritual, and twins who fled it left it unfinished. As Mio searches for Mayu and a way out, she relives the village's tragic past through notes, visions and the spirits themselves.

You fight with the Camera Obscura, a camera that can photograph the impossible and seal away spirits. Raising it puts you in a first-person view through the lens, and the closer the ghost is when you take the picture, the more damage it does, so each fight is a test of nerve. Film and healing items are limited, and the remake adds touches such as holding Mayu's hand as you lead her through the dark.

It is slow, atmospheric Japanese horror, built on dread, sorrow and sudden apparitions more than gore. It suits players who liked Maiden of Black Water and anyone who wants a classic ghost story told with modern visuals.

How to play FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE

  1. Explore the village as Mio, searching houses and shrines for notes, keys and items.
  2. When a ghost appears, raise the Camera Obscura and keep it in the frame.
  3. Wait until the ghost is close to take the strongest shot, then move away before it attacks.
  4. Use film and healing items carefully, and keep Mayu with you as you search for the way out.

Tips

  • Shots taken at the last moment do the most damage.
  • Check corners with the camera; some spirits and secrets only show through the lens.
