What frightens It looks like a cheerful 1990s kart racer with cute cats, but you are the only one at the starting line, and the makers call it a surreal, horror-themed exploration of a broken world: you drive off the track into scrapped courses, beta maps and dreamscapes, with garbled dialogue, dark empty arenas and what the makers warn is disturbing imagery and flashing lights.

Content: flashing lights, disturbing imagery.

Kitty Kart 64 is a free surreal horror game made to look and play like a cheerful Nintendo 64 kart racer. You show up for the race with a cast of cute cats, but the course will not stay a course, and you drive out of bounds into scrapped tracks, beta maps and dreamscapes that should not be there.

About Kitty Kart 64

Kitty Kart 64 is made by Scrunklesoft Interactive, a small team led by Andrew Brandenburg with SimplyBLGDev, and began as an entry to the 2023 LSD Jam. The demo came out on itch.io in early 2024 and drew a large following; the makers then stopped updating it to work on a full release, which has a Steam page with no date yet.

On its store page it plays the part straight: three laps, seven tracks, a cast of cute characters and fun for the whole family. It looks the part too, with chunky low-poly karts, blurry textures, a checkered start line and a 4:3 picture like a game from 1998. You drive with a keyboard or a controller, drift, hop and honk, and talk to the other characters you meet.

The Steam page says more: you are the only one who showed up at the starting line, and the game is a surreal, horror-themed exploration of a broken kart racer, where you leave the track to find scrapped courses, beta maps and dreamscapes, collect secrets and learn to make the game break. The cheer in its menus and dialogue sits against empty dark arenas, glitched text, sudden changes of place and imagery the makers warn may disturb.

It is a game of unease more than of chases or jump scares, and players in the comments call it creepy and uncanny, with a catchy soundtrack. It suits players who like games that pretend to be something else, and anyone who grew up with N64 kart racers and wants to see one go wrong.

  3. Steer with WASD or the left stick, and drift or hop with Ctrl or the right trigger.
  4. Talk to the other characters you meet with E or X.
  5. Explore past the edges of each track to find where the game goes next.

Tips

  • Read the warning first: the makers say it has flashing lights and disturbing imagery.
  • Go in without reading spoilers; much of the effect is not knowing what the race turns into.
  • If you only get a black screen with sound, check the comments on its itch.io page, where other players discuss it.
