Content: brief blood, jumpscares.
Duck Season is a VR horror game by Stress Level Zero, set over one day in summer 1988. You play a duck-hunting game on a rented cartridge with a light gun, while its cheerful dog mascot turns out to be something that can leave the screen. A flat-screen edition, Duck Season PC, plays without a headset.
About Duck Season
Duck Season was made by Stress Level Zero, the studio behind Boneworks and Bonelab, and released for PC VR headsets on Steam in September 2017. In 2019 the studio released Duck Season PC, the full game playable on an ordinary monitor, with extra hunting game types.
It is summer vacation in 1988 and your mom has just rented the coolest new game for your Kingbit Entertainment System. You spend the day in the family living room, playing Duck Season on the old television with a light gun, hunting ducks in seven mini games alongside the game's grinning hunting dog. Between sessions you explore the house, watch short films on VHS tapes and notice that things are changing.
The horror grows out of nostalgia. The store calls it a throwback to 1980s games and films with a hint of horror, and the plot turns on the dog, who, if provoked, starts to stalk you in real life. The day and night end in one of seven endings, with dozens of secrets and sub-plots to find.
It suits players who grew up with light-gun games and want a horror story built from a childhood bedroom, and VR players who want a game that uses the headset to put something right behind them.
