What frightens It opens as a pastel cooking game where you serve the town's animals as Bonnie the baker, and the page insists that is all it is; then the game turns into a first-person night in Bonnie's basement, where you hide from her while finding notes and a keycode to escape, among the gore and body horror of where her very fresh ingredients come from.

Content: gore, body horror, blood.

Bonnie's Bakery is a free horror game on itch.io that starts as a cute 2D cooking game, serving pastries to animal customers as Bonnie the baker. Then it becomes a first-person escape from her basement, hiding from her while you hunt for the code that lets you out, toward one of several endings.

About Bonnie's Bakery

Bonnie's Bakery was made by a small team, aislebsoupid, DesyncDev, Sandtastegreat and others, with Melty Clown Studio, and released free on itch.io in 2022, where it plays in the browser and can be downloaded for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its page shows a GDEX 2023 Best in Show, Most Innovative laurel, and over five hundred players rate it 4.5 out of 5. The makers state that no generative AI was used. The web build is slow to load the first time, and the makers recommend the download for a smoother game.

The page describes it with a straight face: a game where you serve customers delicious food as Bonnie, and nothing else. The first half is exactly that. In soft pastel art you sweep the bakery, take orders from animal customers at the counter and follow recipe cards for red velvet cakes and doughnuts, mixing, rolling and baking against the clock.

Then it changes. The second half is played in 3D, in first person, in Bonnie's basement, which is not a place for pastries. You have to sneak and hide while she wanders it, find notes and clues, and work out a keycode to get out, among gore and body horror that make clear where her fresh ingredients come from. Players remember the switch as the point: a cute 2D game that turns, without much warning, into a creepy 3D survival game.

How well you did in the bakery shapes how the night goes, and there are several endings to find; a full run takes about half an hour. A longer paid version with more modes, Bonnie's Bakery - Fresh Ingredients, is sold separately, and Melty Clown Studio sells an expanded Bonnie's Bakery on Steam.

How to play Bonnie's Bakery

  1. Open the game on itch.io and press Run game, or download it for Windows, macOS or Linux; the web build takes a while to load the first time.
  2. In the bakery, click customers to take their orders and follow the recipe book to make each pastry.
  3. Serve orders quickly and correctly; your score matters later.
  4. When night comes, explore the basement in first person with the keyboard and mouse.
  5. Stay out of Bonnie's sight, collect the notes and clues, and use them to find the keycode and escape.

Tips

  • Do the bakery half well; players say your score decides which ending you can reach.
  • Read the recipe cards carefully before mixing; wrong steps waste time.
  • In the basement, listen for Bonnie and wait for her to pass before moving.
  • Replay for the other endings; players count several, and some depend on scoring high or low on purpose.
