What frightens A hand-pencilled Alpine folk horror: returning to your grandfather's remote valley after his strange death, you uncover a pact with the devil, meet villagers who speak an obscure language, and face creatures of hay and myth that roam the mountainside, while fear itself slows your steps.

Content: jumpscares, disturbing imagery, death.

Mundaun is a first-person folk horror game set in a secluded valley of the Swiss Alps, drawn entirely in pencil. Called back by your grandfather's death, you climb from green meadows to snowy peaks, solve puzzles, collect what you need and face what the devil left on the mountain.

About Mundaun

Mundaun was made by Hidden Fields, a small Swiss studio, and published by Annapurna Interactive in 2021 on PC and consoles. Its look is its signature: every texture in the game was drawn by hand in pencil and scanned, giving it the grey, grainy feel of an old illustration come to life.

You play Curdin, who comes back to the valley of Mundaun when his grandfather dies in a fire in a barn. The locals are few and strange, speaking their own language; a priest seems to know more than he says; and the old stories about a deal with the devil look less like stories the higher you climb.

The game is open in its levels. You walk meadows, forests and mountain paths, drive a tractor and ride a chair lift, collect items in an inventory, and solve puzzles that fit the world, such as brewing coffee to steady your nerves or finding the right tool for a lock. Creatures made of hay and worse roam parts of the valley, and a fear-resistance factor means that the more frightened you are, the slower you move.

It is a slow, atmospheric game where dread builds from silence, weather and folk belief more than jumpscares. It suits players who like folk horror and a game with a look of its own.

How to play Mundaun

  1. Explore the valley in first person, talking to the villagers and picking up items for your inventory.
  2. Solve the puzzles you meet by using and combining what you carry.
  3. Keep your fear in check; when it rises you slow down, so steady yourself before facing danger.
  4. Avoid or deal with the creatures on the mountain using what you find, and push on up toward the peak.

Tips

  • Look for coffee; it helps you stay steady in tense places.
