Nightmare House: The Original Mod is the free Steam release, from We Create Stuff in 2024, of a horror series that started in 2010 as a Source mod for Half-Life 2. This edition puts the first Nightmare House, its sequel Nightmare House 2 and The Lost Files together as one game.

You wake up in an abandoned house at night and make your way out, only to end up in a torn-down hospital ironically named Never Lose Hope. A ghost girl follows you through both places, and the game's scare system places sudden frights where you do not expect them. Along the way you find weapons, from an axe to guns, and use them on the undead that come at you in growing numbers.

This is horror where you fight back rather than hide. The fear comes from dark halls, blood on the tiles, things that appear beside you and the pressure of the next wave, more than from scarce supplies. It suits players who like the older Source-engine horror mods and want jumpscares with a shooter's pace. It runs on Windows only.

How to play Nightmare House: The Original Mod

1. Install Nightmare House: The Original Mod for free from Steam.
2. Move with WASD and look with the mouse; pick up the weapons you find as you go.
3. Explore the house and then the hospital, opening doors and finding the way forward.
4. Fight off the undead with melee and firearms, and keep moving when the ghost appears.
5. Save whenever you like; the game lets you save at any point.

Tips

• Play with headphones; many scares are signalled by sound first.
• Save before opening a new area so a sudden fight does not cost you progress.
• Check rooms for ammunition and health before pushing on.
