Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion: HD Renovation is the Unity remake of the 2014 free horror game. You walk through 1000 rooms of a mansion run by Spooky, a ghost girl, where cardboard jumpscares give way to monsters you can only outrun.

Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion started in 2014 as a free game by Lag Studios and became well known through YouTube let's plays. HD Renovation is Albino Moose Games' 2017 rebuild in Unity, with 3D models, new specimens, VR support, an Endless Mode and the Karamari Hospital and Spooky's Dollhouse expansions included. It later came to PlayStation 4 in 2019, Switch in 2022 and Xbox in 2023, and its VR mode works on Steam and PlayStation VR.

You enter a mansion and meet Spooky, a young ghost girl who explains that the only way out is through all of its rooms, about a thousand of them. The room count sits in the corner of the screen. For the first rooms the scares are a joke: cardboard cut-outs of cute ghosts pop out of the walls with a noise. That changes. After the opening rooms the specimens arrive, monsters each with their own rules, and from then on you are walking corridors and waiting for the next one to appear behind you.

You have a health bar and stamina for sprinting, but no weapon. Each specimen has to be outrun or avoided in its own way, and the rooms change style as you go deeper, from stone halls to labs and dark classrooms. Notes left by earlier visitors add to the unease.

It suits players who like long, room-by-room runs, monster chases and jumpscares, and the shift from parody to real fear that made the original popular. Steam Workshop support lets players build and share their own mansions.

Talk to Spooky at the entrance and walk through the doors to move from room to room.
Read the notes you find along the way for hints about the house and its specimens.
When a specimen appears, sprint away and keep moving, watching your stamina bar.
Learn how each specimen moves and attacks, because each one has to be escaped differently.

Tips

Save stamina for the moment a specimen is close rather than sprinting all the time.
The early cardboard scares are harmless; the danger starts when specimens appear.
Endless Mode and the included expansions are there once you want more after the main run.
