What frightens Dakota, a musician stuck with writer's block, shuts themself away in a cabin deep in the Appalachian forest to record an album, and the woods turn strange: glowing doors stand among the trees, dark corridors open in dreamscapes, and things come for them that have to be fought off with whatever is at hand.

Content: suicide, animal death, violence.

Project Songbird is a first-person cinematic psychological horror game by Conner Rush and FYRE Games, the maker of Summerland. Dakota, a musician with writer's block, isolates themself in a remote Appalachian cabin to record an album, and a 4 to 5 hour nightmare of forests and haunting dreamscapes follows.

About Project Songbird

Project Songbird was made by Conner Rush, a solo developer working as FYRE Games, the maker of Summerland and We Never Left from Dread X Collection 5. It was released on Steam in March 2026 and holds a Metacritic score of 76; its page notes it is still in active development.

You play Dakota, a career musician who, stuck with writer's block, isolates themself in a cabin in the remote Appalachian forest to record their next album. The game is presented with a cinematic, film-like look: a warm-lit log cabin, birch woods in fog, a glowing door standing among the trees, a white chapel, dark corridors in dreams.

It is a dark narrative of four to five hours that you explore in first person, with ranged and melee combat and upgradeable weapons to survive the nightmarish parts. The voice cast includes Valerie Rose Lohman, Jonah Scott and Aleks Le, and the soundtrack is by members of the band Auric Echoes. Its maker calls it by far the most personal game he has made, and the store page warns of depictions of suicide and animal death.

It suits players who like short, story-led psychological horror with some fighting.
