Resident Evil 3 is Capcom's remake of the 1999 game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, released in April 2020 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with later versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and iPhone, iPad and Mac. It takes place alongside Resident Evil 2, as the T-Virus outbreak swallows Raccoon City. Jill Valentine, one of the last people left who saw what Umbrella did in the mansion, is a target, and Umbrella sends Nemesis to stop her.

You play from over the shoulder, moving through burning streets, a subway, a hospital and underground facilities. Ammunition is crafted from gunpowder, healing from herbs, and inventory space is limited, so every fight is a trade. Jill can dodge at the last moment to slow time and line up a shot. For part of the game you control Carlos Oliveira, a mercenary from Umbrella's own response team who is better with a rifle.

Nemesis is the heart of the game. In the opening hours he appears without warning, follows you between areas and breaks through anything in his way, and you can only drive him off for a while. Later he returns in tougher forms in set encounters. The zombies, lickers and other creatures in between make the city a constant fight to get from one safe room to the next.

It is shorter and faster than the Resident Evil 2 remake, with more action and fewer puzzles. It suits players who want a tense, cinematic run through a dying city. The PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions include Resident Evil Resistance, a separate online game where four survivors try to escape traps set by a fifth player.

How to play Resident Evil 3

1. Move Jill through Raccoon City, picking up ammunition, gunpowder, herbs and key items.
2. Combine gunpowder into bullets and herbs into healing in your inventory.
3. Aim and shoot at zombies, going for the head, and dodge just before an attack to counter.
4. Run from Nemesis when he appears, or stun him with heavy shots to buy time.
5. Save at typewriters in safe rooms and use item boxes to store what you cannot carry.

Tips

• Learn the dodge; a perfect dodge slows time and gives you a free shot.
• Shoot red explosive barrels and electric generators to take out groups of zombies.
• Do not fight Nemesis in the open city unless you have to; running is often better.
• Check the map; rooms you have fully searched are shown in blue.
• Upgrade your inventory space with hip pouches as soon as you find them.
