What frightens Alone in a small boat in the fog off the Japanese coast, you harpoon fish to sell, and the further out you go the stranger the catch becomes: mutated fish, people with fish heads, and something huge moving under the water at night. The maker calls the horror very light.

Content: fish blood, violence against fish, mutated creatures.

UMIGARI (ウミガリ) is a first-person harpoon fishing game with light horror by Chilla's Art. You hunt fish from a small boat, sell the catch, buy fuel and upgrade your gear, and the further you sail into the fog the stranger the fish and the people of the coast become.

About UMIGARI | ウミガリ

UMIGARI is a 2026 game by Chilla's Art, the Japanese studio behind The Convenience Store and The Closing Shift, and the makers say plainly that it is unlike their past games. It is a first-person fishing game: you spear fish with a harpoon from a small boat in the foggy waters off the coast of Japan, sell what you catch, buy fuel and upgrade your ship's speed and tank so you can reach farther islands.

The horror creeps in as you explore. The fish grow stranger and some react to you; the store's own notes warn of mutated fish. The screenshots show people with the heads of fish, a diver whose mask holds a fish's face, a vast shape breaking the black water at night, and a lit-up waterfront with a Ferris wheel on the horizon. The maker rates the horror intensity as very light and warns players who want something hardcore that this may not be for them.

The store puts a run at two to four hours. Players praise its calm, uncanny mood and the fishing itself; some report bugs and feel it runs a little long.

It suits players who liked DREDGE's mix of fishing and quiet dread and want a stranger, Japanese take on it, and Chilla's Art fans curious to see the studio try something new. There is a free demo on itch.io.

How to play UMIGARI | ウミガリ

  1. Buy it on Steam (or try the free demo on itch.io) and start it on Windows.
  2. Sail out from the harbour and aim and throw your harpoon at the fish you see.
  3. Bring the catch back to sell it, then buy fuel and upgrades for your boat and gear.
  4. Use the extra range to reach new islands and stranger waters, and find equipment along the way.

Tips

  • Watch your fuel before heading out of sight of land.
  • Upgrade fuel capacity early; it decides how far you can explore.
  • Some fish react to you, so do not expect every catch to sit still.
