White Night is a black-and-white noir survival horror game by OSome Studio. After a crash on a dark road you enter an old mansion where light is all that keeps you alive: you strike scarce matches, solve puzzles of light and shadow, and avoid the ghosts waiting in the dark.

About White Night

White Night was made by the French studio OSome Studio and first came out in March 2015. It is drawn entirely in stark black and white, like a film noir, and is played in the manner of the classic 3D survival horror games, through set camera angles that cut as you move.

It is the 1930s. A man drives off the road at night and stumbles to the nearest house for help. The mansion is dark, its doors close behind him, and its past starts to come out in letters, diaries and newspaper cuttings. The house is haunted, and its ghosts, pale glowing women, are deadly to touch.

Light is everything. You carry a limited supply of matches, each burning for a short time, and stepping into true darkness is fatal. Electric lamps that you switch on make safe places. Puzzles of light and shadow open the way: finding the switch, lighting a path, working out where the next key lies. The ghosts cannot be fought, only avoided or driven off with light, so every room becomes a question of where the dark ends.

On Steam it is rated Mostly Positive; critics were mixed, praising the atmosphere while some found the dark art made exploring harder, and GameSpot compared its fixed camera angles to Resident Evil. It is sold today on Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux, on the Nintendo Switch eShop and on the App Store; the original PS4 and Xbox One versions are no longer sold in most regions. It suits players who like slow, atmospheric survival horror with puzzles, in the line of Alone in the Dark.

How to play White Night

  1. Buy White Night on Steam, the Nintendo Switch eShop or the App Store and start the game.
  2. Strike a match to light your way, and keep an eye on how many you have left.
  3. Turn on electric lamps when you find them: lit rooms are safe from the dark.
  4. Read the letters and diaries you find, and solve the light and shadow puzzles that open new parts of the house.
  5. Avoid the ghosts: you cannot fight them, so stay in the light and find another way around.
