CONSCRIPT was made by Jordan Mochi of Catchweight Studio and published by Team17. It came out in July 2024 on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. A Director's Cut update in December 2025 reworked level layouts, added items, equipment, difficulty modes including a permadeath Hardcore mode, and quality-of-life changes.

It is 1916, and the German army is driving deep into France at Verdun, the bloodiest battle of the war. Your younger brother has vanished in the chaos. You set out to find him through collapsed trench lines, occupied forts and no man's land.

The game borrows its rules from classic survival horror. Ammunition is limited, health is fragile, the inventory is small, and combat is methodical and heavy, with stamina that limits you. Environmental puzzles stand between you and the next area. You can play with modern comforts, such as checkpoints and unlimited saves, or choose strict classic limits.

There is nothing supernatural here; the horror is the war: mud, gas, the dead and the next shell. Critics praised its atmosphere and its faithful take on the genre, with some finding the combat stiff and the story vague. It suits fans of old Resident Evil who want something grounded and grim.

How to play CONSCRIPT

1. Choose your difficulty and how strict you want saving and inventory to be.
2. Explore the trenches and forts from above, searching for ammunition, healing and keys.
3. Fight carefully: aim, watch your stamina and use your weapons sparingly.
4. Solve the environmental puzzles that open new areas.
5. Push on through the battle to find your brother, and replay for other endings.

Tips

• Avoid fights you do not need; ammunition is precious.
• Manage stamina in combat; a tired soldier is a dead one.
• Check every dugout and crate for supplies.
• Try the classic limits only once you know the game.
