What frightens Your family is sure a demon lives in you and takes you to a church to have it exorcised; the dread is in the ritual you are made to take part in, in a family that wants you 'normal', and in whether your true self survives it, told with a single ending the maker calls inescapable.

Content: sensitive themes (the maker advises player discretion), religious exorcism, a family rejecting a queer son, sad ending.

Exorcize Me is a short psychological horror visual novel by LiminAce, made in RPG Maker and free to play in the browser. Your family believes a demon resides in you and takes you to be exorcised, and as the ritual nears you start to wonder what of your true self will be left.

About Exorcize Me

Exorcize Me is a short horror visual novel by LiminAce, made with RPG Maker for the sixth RPG Maker Horror Game Jam (theme: Fear the Devil) in autumn 2024, and also entered in Hawktober Horrors 2024. It plays in the browser on itch.io, with Windows, macOS and Android downloads, and you can name your own price, including nothing.

Your family believes that a demon resides in you. You never believed in that kind of thing, yet you cannot stop dwelling on the idea, and now they are taking you to have it exorcised. Maybe afterwards you will finally be what they call normal. Maybe you will be able to stop hiding who you are, if that self survives at all. The game follows Clarence and Asher, and its itch.io tags mark it as an LGBTQIA story.

Most of it is read: dialogue over hand-drawn character portraits and more than 20 illustrated scenes, with a snarky narrator who, as the maker puts it, is there to contrast the dread. Between scenes you walk a candle-lit church in a top-down view and take part in the preparations for the ritual, lighting candles one by one. The horror is quiet and close: faith used as a rule book, a family that loves a version of you that is not real, and a ceremony you cannot stop.

It takes 20 to 40 minutes and has one ending, which the maker calls inescapable. It shares a world with LiminAce's other games, such as Dress Me Down, but needs none of them. The maker warns that it contains sensitive content. It suits players who like short, sad story-led horror where the threat is the people around you.

Tips

  • Read the maker's note on sensitive content before you start.
  • Play with sound on: the soundtrack carries much of the mood.
  • Players report that the browser version sometimes cuts off the last letter of a word; the download avoids that if it bothers you.
  • There is only one ending, so read at your own pace rather than hunting for choices.
