FROSTBITE: Deadly Climate is a free first-person survival horror game by Alex Olinkiewicz. A biologist caught in a snowstorm shelters in an unpowered arctic research base, where he must keep warm, manage scarce items and face what else is inside.

About FROSTBITE: Deadly Climate

FROSTBITE: Deadly Climate is a free first-person survival horror game made by Alex Olinkiewicz and released on Steam in July 2018. Its maker says it takes heavy inspiration from John Carpenter's The Thing in its setting and story, and from Resident Evil 7 in how it plays, with atmosphere and psychological horror ahead of cheap jump scares.

A lone arctic biologist gets lost in a sudden snowstorm and takes refuge in a research base known only as Base 75. The base has no power, so it has no heat, and it is soon clear that he is not alone.

The cold is a constant pressure. Your body temperature slowly drains, its effects growing as it falls, and at zero you begin to lose health; the temperature of each area changes with what you do there. Exploration, item management, puzzles and combat make up the game, and it borrows two old rules: you need an item to save, as in Resident Evil, and a map marks open and locked doors and your current goal, as in Silent Hill. There are four difficulty modes, from Easy to Nightmare.

It suits players who want a free, old-fashioned survival horror game with a cold, isolated setting and a slow sense of being hunted.

How to play FROSTBITE: Deadly Climate

  1. Explore Base 75 in first person and look for a way to restore power and escape.
  2. Watch your body temperature and find ways to warm up before it reaches zero.
  3. Collect items and ammunition and manage what you carry.
  4. Use the map to track open and locked doors and your current objective.
  5. Find the item you need to save, and save when you can.

Tips

  • Do not linger in the coldest areas; temperature loss adds up quickly.
  • Save items are limited, so use them after real progress, not every few minutes.
  • Check the map often to avoid wandering the freezing halls.
  • Choose Easy first if you want to learn the base before the harder modes.
