What frightens The city of Huta-Grobno has had no sunlight for months under strange clouds, and the radio reports unexplained incidents all over town. Holed up in your apartment, you check the radio, watch the hallway through the door's peephole and keep track of the hours on your wristwatch, until one of those strange things appears inside your flat.

Content: blood.

Funeralopolis: Last Days is a free, short first-person horror story by BananaDevJeff, set in an apartment block in the gloomy city of Huta-Grobno. You stay holed up in your flat, following radio reports of strange incidents, until one of those strange things appears in your own home. It takes about an hour and the maker calls its horror light.

About Funeralopolis: Last Days

Funeralopolis: Last Days is a first-person game made in Unreal Engine by BananaDevJeff, with coding by GrassWind and music by UglyOldHands. It came out free on itch.io for Windows in September 2024.

The city of Huta-Grobno has not seen sunlight in months. Strange clouds sit over it, and the radio keeps reporting incidents nobody can explain. You have been holed up in your apartment for a while, passing the days in a cramped flat full of old furniture, notes scribbled from the broadcasts and neighbours down the hall. Then one of those strange things appears inside your apartment, and you have to deal with it.

The maker describes it as story-oriented, text-heavy and linear, with light horror elements. Play is looking around and reading: almost every object has a line of text, the neighbours have plenty to say, and the game saves at the start of each day. The maker's advice is to check the radio often, look out at the hallway through the door's peephole and keep an eye on the time on your wristwatch.

What unsettles is the slow weight of it: a dim, run-down block, a city where something is going wrong just out of sight, and stains on floors that should be clean. Players on its page single out the atmosphere and the real-feeling characters more than scares. It suits players who like quiet, story-led horror in a lived-in place, and anyone curious about a short game with an Eastern European apartment-block setting.

The maker has announced an extended paid version on Steam, renamed Grobnopolis | Last Days, with two epilogues; the itch.io version stays free.

  3. Check the radio often for news of what is happening in the city.
  4. Look out at the hallway through the door's peephole and keep track of the time on your wristwatch.

Tips

  • Click on everything: much of the story is in the descriptions of objects around the flat.
  • Listen to every radio broadcast, as they tell you what is going on outside.
  • If the game will not start with a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error, the maker has a devlog post about that error on the game's page.
