The Windows Are Gone is a free, short psychological horror game by Scary Cube. After a tragic accident leaves you with grief and guilt, a house you keep dreaming of calls to you, and you move in. It takes under an hour and has more than one ending.

About The Windows Are Gone

The Windows Are Gone was made by Scary Cube and released free on Steam in October 2023. It is also on itch.io, where you name your own price. It is playable in English and Brazilian Portuguese.

Haunted by grief and guilt after a tragic accident, you start seeing a house in your dreams. You cannot get its image out of your mind, and you feel it calling for you, so you answer it. The opening shows you in a car beside your wife, before the house in the woods.

You play in first person. You bring the boxes inside and place furniture to make the house your own, read messages on an old phone, use a beige computer, and explore to find secrets and the clues left by the previous owner. The maker says it works on you through narrative, sound and picture rather than through a chase, and players note the lack of cheap jump scares; they describe a well-lit, inviting house turning claustrophobic as things change.

It suits players who like quiet, sad psychological horror in the spirit of P.T. and Silent Hill 2, which the maker has said inspired it, and want something to finish in one evening.

How to play The Windows Are Gone
