What frightens Rake, a nearly blind creature that sees through sound, hears footsteps, breaking objects and even your voice over long distances and runs you down at speed, so every noise you make can bring it to you.

In Silence is an online horror game where one player is Rake, a blind creature that sees by sound, and the others are survivors trying to fix a car and escape or break into an armory to hunt it down. Every footstep, broken vase and word over voice chat can give you away.

About In Silence

In Silence is a multiplayer horror game from Ravenhood Games, released on Steam in October 2021 for Windows and Mac. One player takes the role of Rake, a pale monster that is almost completely blind but hears everything; the rest, from two to six players, are survivors in a dark, snowy stretch of woods, houses and sheds. There is also a single-player mode where you face Rake alone.

Rake's sight depends on sound. The less noise there is, the less it can see, and it can hear the smallest sound over great distances and run at high speed. As a survivor you creep through the map looking for parts, stepping around toys and anything that might break. Noisy objects work both ways: a television or radio can pull Rake away from you, or lure it into a trap.

Survivors have two ways to win. They can find the missing parts, repair a car and drive off, or find and open a secret armory and take weapons to fight back. Opening the armory or the escape gates enrages Rake, and in that state it can kill while running. Your one defence is a flashlight with a flashbang that stuns Rake, but it can blind your friends too and it needs charge. If you die, you return as a mouse and can still help by finding items or distracting the monster.

Perks, escape points, roles and item placement are randomized each match, and a Nightmare mode leaves only exactly as many items on the map as you need. Proximity voice chat means you hear other players only when they are near, and Rake can hear them too. It suits groups who enjoy the asymmetric format of Dead by Daylight but want a match built around sound and silence rather than chases.

How to play In Silence

  1. Buy and install In Silence on Steam for Windows or Mac, then join or host an online match, or start single-player mode.
  2. As a survivor, move slowly and avoid noisy objects; check which parts the car needs or look for the armory.
  3. Use a television or radio to make noise elsewhere and draw Rake away from where you need to work.
  4. Keep your flashlight charged and use its flashbang to stun Rake if it catches you or a friend.
  5. Repair the car and escape, or open the armory and take the fight to Rake.
  6. As Rake, listen for noise, chase down what you hear and catch the survivors before they get away.

Tips

  • Talk only when you must; Rake hears proximity voice chat as well as footsteps.
  • Look where you step: toys and breakable objects make noise that shows you to Rake.
  • Do not flash the flashbang near your friends unless you mean to, it blinds them too.
  • Expect Rake to become more dangerous once the armory or the gates are opened, and be ready to move.
  • If you die, keep playing as the mouse: fetching items and distracting Rake can still win the match.
