A sweet night at your boyfriend's place, until a guest arrives.

What frightens: You spend the evening at your boyfriend's flat until a guest arrives who should not be there. The bright pastel rooms and sweet talk start to feel wrong, the illustrations turn bloody, and a voice tells you that you may have what it takes to become a god.

Content: blood, disturbing themes, intended for ages 17 and up.

Sofia? is a queer RPG Maker mystery horror game by Hatoge. You spend the night at your boyfriend's flat until an unforeseen guest interrupts, and you have to work out the truth of the evening before you are left in the dark. It has eight endings and runs about an hour to an hour and a half.

About Sofia?

Sofia? is a short mystery horror adventure made in RPG Maker MV by the solo developer Hatoge, who built it between May and September 2021. You play a young man spending a quiet evening with his boyfriend in a cosy pastel apartment, chatting, texting and getting ready for a one-month anniversary.

The night does not stay quiet. An unexpected guest interrupts, and the evening turns into a trap you cannot easily leave. You walk through the flat, talk to the people in it, examine objects and pick what to say, and what you notice decides which of the eight endings you reach.

The horror comes from contrast. The rooms are soft pinks and purples, the characters are drawn in a gentle anime style, and then one of the 25 full illustrations shows something bloody standing behind someone you trusted. It relies on unease and revelation more than on chases or jump scares.

The maker intends it for players aged 17 and up. The browser version can be played on this page, though the maker notes some scenes may load better in the free Windows download, and a spoiler-free walkthrough is offered on the itch.io page. A paid Extended Edition adds two more endings and bonus material.

How to play Sofia?

  1. Start the game and read through the opening evening with your boyfriend.
  2. Walk around the apartment and examine objects and people to learn more.
  3. Choose what to say and do when the game gives you options; your choices lead to different endings.
  4. After an ending, start again and try other choices to find the other endings.

  • Examine everything in each room; small details matter for the endings.
  • Save often so you can return to a choice and try the other path.
  • If a scene does not load in the browser, the maker recommends the Windows download.
  • The maker's spoiler-free walkthrough on the itch.io page helps if you get stuck.
