What frightens Alone with a bank of CCTV cameras until 6 AM, you watch ordinary-looking places for things that change: furniture that moves, blood, figures that were not there. Miss too many and whatever is out there notices it is being watched, and comes for you.

Content: blood, sudden appearances of creepy figures.

Spectator is a CCTV anomaly-spotting horror game by Minechan and Neko Machine. You watch the cameras of six places drawn from creepypasta, such as the Backrooms and Slender's woods, and report every anomaly before 6 AM; miss too many and whatever is out there comes for you.

About Spectator

Spectator was made by Minechan and Neko Machine. It entered Early Access on Steam in October 2022 and was released in full in February 2023 for Windows, Mac and Linux, and came to Nintendo Switch in September 2023. A free prologue is on itch.io.

You work remotely, watching a CCTV system for suspicious activity. The places look ordinary, but they are sites of paranormal phenomena, and your job is not only to notice what changes but to report it and apply the proper countermeasure. The makers warn that whatever lurks out there will eventually notice it is being watched.

Each of the six environments draws on creepypasta: the store page names the Backrooms and Slender, and the Switch page adds FazPizza. Every level has more than sixty anomalies, generated so each night differs: an object appears or vanishes, a light flickers, blood shows on a wall, a camera glitches, or a figure stands where nobody was. You cycle through the cameras, spot the change and file a report by type. Miss too many before 6 AM and the night ends badly.

It plays like I'm on Observation Duty with internet-horror settings and a realistic look, and suits players who like slow, careful watching broken by the jolt of something new on screen.

How to play Spectator

  1. Pick one of the six locations and start the night shift.
  2. Cycle through the cameras and learn how each room looks when nothing is wrong.
  3. When something changes, choose the type of anomaly (a moved object, blood, a light, a disappearance and so on) and report it.
  4. Keep watching until 6 AM without letting too many anomalies go unreported.

Tips

  • Spend the first minutes memorising each camera: anomalies are easiest to see against a picture you know well.
  • Check every camera in a steady loop rather than staring at one.
  • Pick the right anomaly type; a wrong report does not fix the change.
  • Anomalies are generated each time, so a level you have beaten will still surprise you.
