What frightens You and your crew explore abandoned biosphere domes on the ocean floor and the procedural dungeons beneath them, scavenging while creatures lurk in the dark corridors and wastelands; stay out too late and you find you are not alone, and the store warns that players die in many ways, including decapitation.

Content: gore, decapitation, jumpscares.

Subterror is a first-person co-op horror game for one to four players by Team Monumental. Your crew dives to abandoned biosphere domes on the ocean floor, crawls their procedural dungeons for loot, and tries to get out before the things living down there catch you.

About Subterror

Subterror was released on Steam in January 2025 by Team Monumental. At the bottom of the ocean lie the Biospheres, weather-controlled domes that once held vast numbers of living things and have since been abandoned. Your crew of up to four goes down to find out why they were built, and to bring something back.

Each dome has its own climate, from arid desert to dark forest and frozen tundra, and beneath them lie procedurally built dungeons. You carry what you can, with weight and a small inventory to manage, and the store warns not to leave empty-handed if you want to keep going deeper. Players describe a quota of calories to feed a monster in a set time, and doors opened with Morse code.

The store keeps it short: do not stay too late, because you are not alone in the abyss, and players can die in many ways, including decapitation. Screenshots show the blocky, pixel-textured corridors in red emergency light, a pair of red eyes waiting in a dark doorway, and a crewmate with a lamp-like head beside a sign reading Feed the Monster.

Players compare it to Lethal Company and R.E.P.O., call it scary and cheap, and wish it had more content and updates. It suits groups who have played those and want another dark extraction run with a different setting.

How to play Subterror

  1. Gather a crew of up to four, or go alone for a harder run.
  2. Dive to a biosphere dome and explore its desert, forest or tundra.
  3. Enter the procedural dungeons beneath and gather loot, minding your weight and inventory slots.
  4. Avoid the creatures in the dark and get back before it is too late.
  5. Bring enough back to continue deeper underwater.

Tips

  • Keep an inventory slot free for loot instead of filling every slot with tools.
  • Watch the clock; the store warns against staying out too late.
  • Learn the Morse code chart, which players say opens doors.
