Late Night Mop is a small first-person horror game by Lixian, made in Unreal Engine and released on Game Jolt in September 2022. Its maker sums it up as a haunted house cleaning simulator, and its Game Jolt page offers Windows and Mac downloads on a pay what you want basis.

The setup is a job. One of your clients needs the house ready in the morning and asks you to do a quick clean-up late at night. You arrive with your mop and a task list, and work through the dark hallways, the kitchen and the other rooms, wiping up stains and emptying trash. Once you are inside, strange things start happening.

The house is lit in cold blues, with curtains drawn, potted plants in the corners and rubbish on the floors, so every corner you turn to clean is a corner you cannot see past. The game's title art shows what waits: a pale figure with black, staring eyes and a wide grin peering out from behind a doorway. Players on its page say it made them jump more than once.

Version 1.1 added a mouse sensitivity option, a quit button on the task list, a Trash Cans Galore cheat in the Extras menu, and moved one living-room stain that was too hidden in the dark. It suits players who want a short, focused jumpscare game with a simple routine to break.

How to play Late Night Mop

1. Download Late Night Mop from its Game Jolt page (pay what you want) for Windows or Mac.
2. Move with WASD, look with the mouse and click to interact.
3. Open the task list to see what the client wants cleaned.
4. Mop the stains and clear the trash room by room in the dark house.
5. Keep working through the list as strange things start to happen, and finish the job.

Tips

• Check the task list often; it shows what is still left to clean.
• Some stains are in dark corners, so look along the floor edges of every room.
• Set the mouse sensitivity in the options first; it was added in version 1.1.
• Play with headphones; the scares rely on what you hear.
