What frightens You find yourself inside an inexplicable nightmare and make your way through hostile, dark places, a house with a static-filled TV, red-lit corridors with words scrawled on the walls, a pale face behind a door and a talking stuffed rabbit, collecting pieces of a story about murder and child abduction while something waits in the dark; you have a pistol, but it does not make you safe.

Content: violence, murder, nudity, child abduction themes, jumpscares.

Unspoken is a short first-person indie horror game with a retro look. You make your way through a nightmare of dark houses and red-lit corridors, collecting pieces of a grim story of murder and child abduction, armed with a pistol that does little against what waits in the dark.

About Unspoken

Unspoken is a short indie horror game by Weeping Studio, released on Steam in April 2024. Its store text is brief: you find yourself at the centre of an inexplicable nightmare, make your way through hostile locations, collect the pieces of the story and survive on the edge of madness.

You can protect yourself physically, and you carry a pistol, but the store warns that no one knows what waits in the dark, and players say having a gun does not help as much as you would like. The store promises an intense atmosphere, a dire story and a fast pace.

The screenshots show a cluttered living room with a TV full of static, a pale face looking out from behind a bedroom door, a teddy bear beside a red telephone, a stuffed rabbit begging you not to shoot, and dark corridors lit red where a figure stands at the far end and words are scrawled on the walls. The maker warns of violence, murder, nudity and themes of child abduction.

Players who liked it call it one of the scarier short games they have played. It suits players who want a dark, compact nightmare in one sitting.

How to play Unspoken

  1. Wake in the nightmare and take stock of the dark around you.
  2. Move through each hostile location, searching for the pieces of the story.
  3. Use the phone, notes and objects you find to understand what happened.
  4. Keep your pistol ready, but do not count on it to save you.
  5. Push on through the red-lit corridors to the end of the nightmare.

Tips

  • Search each room before moving on; the story is told in what you collect.
  • Do not waste time shooting at everything; players say the gun is not the answer.
  • Play in the dark with sound up; much of what is coming is heard before it is seen.
