What frightens You are a child alone in a dark bedroom, and nightmare animatronics creep toward you from the hallway doors, the closet and the bed behind you. With no cameras, you have only a flashlight and your ears: shine it to drive them back, but if one has crept close and you hear it breathing, the light is the end of you.

Content: jumpscares, fantasy violence, relies on sound (headphones recommended).

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 moves the series into a child's bedroom. With no cameras, you move between two doors, the closet and the bed, listening at the doors and using a flashlight to drive back nightmare animatronics until 6 AM.

About Five Nights at Freddy's 4

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 is the fourth game in Scott Cawthon's series and, in the words of its store page, the last chapter of the original story. It came out on PC in July 2015, on Android and iOS shortly after, and on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in November 2019, published there by Clickteam.

This time the terror has followed you home. You play a child whose role is not yet known, alone in a bedroom at night, and you must last until 6 AM. Nightmare versions of Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Bonnie and Foxy, and worse things, come for you down the hallways, out of the closet and onto the bed behind you.

There are no security cameras. You walk between the two doors, the closet and the bed, and you can hold a door shut for a while. Your only weapon is a flashlight: it scares away things at the far end of the hallway, but if something has crept close to the door, shining a light in its eyes gets you killed. So you listen at each door before you decide. On the fifth night Nightmare Fredbear arrives, and the flashlight does not stop him.

Between nights a red light, green light minigame called Fun with Plushtrap can take two hours off the next night, and on PC Atari-style minigames tell more of the story; these were left out of the mobile versions. Because so much depends on sound, the game is best played with headphones in a quiet room.

How to play Five Nights at Freddy's 4

  1. Walk to one of the two doors and listen carefully before you do anything.
  2. If you hear nothing, shine the flashlight down the hallway to drive back anything at the far end.
  3. If you hear something close, hold the door shut instead and wait for it to leave.
  4. Turn to the bed and the closet and use the flashlight to clear what climbs onto the bed or hides in the closet.
  5. Keep going until 6 AM, and play Fun with Plushtrap between nights to shorten the next one.

Tips

  • Play with headphones in a quiet room; a creature close to the door is easy to miss.
  • Never shine the light on something that is already close at the door.
  • Check the bed behind you regularly as well as the doors.
  • Win Fun with Plushtrap to cut two hours off the next night.
