What frightens A prototype endoskeleton called the Mimic hides inside the costumes of an abandoned workshop and can take the shape of any of them; it stalks you through dark corridors, and the costumed figures around you may or may not be it.

Content: jumpscares, loud sounds, fantasy violence.

A first-person Five Nights at Freddy's game in which you explore Murray's Costume Manor, the abandoned workshop of the inventor Edwin Murray, to recover Fazbear Entertainment's prototype technology. The Mimic, an endoskeleton that can wear any costume and become any character, hunts you while you solve puzzles with only a few gadgets. It trades the series' office and cameras for a free-roaming stealth hunt.

About Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic

Secret of the Mimic was made by Steel Wool Studios, the team behind Help Wanted and Security Breach, and published by ScottGames. It came out on PC and PlayStation 5 in June 2025 and on Xbox Series X|S and Switch that December.

You are sent into Murray's Costume Manor, a sprawling workshop where Edwin Murray built mascot costumes and animatronics, with a heavily redacted briefing and orders to bring back his prototype. The game is played in first person and leaves you to find your way: there is no detailed map and little hand-holding, so you read notes, open locked rooms, repair machines and solve puzzles to go deeper.

The threat is the Mimic itself, an endoskeleton that learned to copy whatever it wears. It appears as clowns, elephants and other costumed characters, and you can never be quite sure whether a figure slumped in a corner is a costume or the thing hunting you. You cannot fight back. You listen for it, hide, use gadgets to distract it, and run when it finds you.

It is closer to a stealth exploration game than the night-survival formula of the first games, with more story and lore than most of the series. It suits FNAF fans who want the mystery explained and players who like a slow, puzzle-heavy hunt in the dark.

How to play Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic

  1. Read your briefing and explore the manor's rooms with your flashlight.
  2. Collect keys, parts and notes, and use them to open locked areas and solve puzzles.
  3. Listen for the Mimic and break line of sight when it is near.
  4. Find cover and stay out of its sight until it moves on; run only when you must.
  5. Use your gadgets to distract it or open new routes.

Tips

  • Check notes and computers carefully; there is no quest marker to tell you where to go.
  • Learn each area's hiding places before you start a noisy task.
  • Costumed figures that seem lifeless are worth watching for a moment before you pass.
