What frightens In a mythical feudal Japan where demons walk the earth, a lone foot soldier enters a dark labyrinth to kill the Demon King who betrayed his lord. Its twisting corridors hold yokai, skeletons and bloody abominations that can be dismembered, healing and saves are scarce, and low-poly, dithered visuals keep much of each room in shadow.

Content: gore, blood, disturbing imagery.

Labyrinth Of The Demon King is a first-person dungeon crawler with survival horror at its core, set in a mythical feudal Japan overrun by demons. As a lone ashigaru you search a dark labyrinth for scarce supplies, fight yokai and abominations with katana, naginata and bow, and save only at shrines along the way.

About Labyrinth Of The Demon King

Labyrinth Of The Demon King was made by J. R. Hudepohl and published by Top Hat Studios on 13 May 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Reviewers describe it as a mix of King's Field-style dungeon crawling with the atmosphere of early Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

The world has entered the latter age of the Dharma: war, disease and famine have spread, and demons walk the earth. You are an ashigaru, a foot soldier of Lord Takeda Nobumitsu, the only survivor of an ambush a demon king led your lord into. Having vowed to kill the demon, you enter its labyrinth.

You explore in first person through rain-soaked villages, dark wooden corridors and shrines, gathering limited resources, armour and talismans, and clues for the puzzles the Demon King has set. Fights with katanas, naginatas, bows and muskets are slow and drain stamina. Saving happens at shrines, where essence can be spent to raise health or stamina, and a tea house offers healing and merchants. Strange characters along the way may help or deceive you.

The low-poly, dithered look keeps detail murky, and the monsters drawn from Japanese myth and beyond are bloody and grotesque. It suits players who like King's Field, slow first-person exploration and survival horror's scarcity, and who do not mind demanding combat.

How to play Labyrinth Of The Demon King

  1. Explore the labyrinth in first person, checking every corner for supplies, armour and talismans.
  2. Fight with your chosen weapon, watching your stamina bar so you are not caught without it.
  3. Pray at shrines to save and spend essence on more health or stamina.
  4. Read clues and use what you find to solve the Demon King's puzzles.
  5. Visit the tea house for healing and to trade with its merchants.
