What frightens You care for your 98-year-old grandmother in her dusty, run-down apartment, giving pills on the hour, but she starts looking at you as if she does not know you, or as if she sees someone else. At night you wake to footsteps behind the wall and cannot tell if they are hers, and the routine slowly turns into a story of fear, greed and payback.

Content: violence or gore (developer's content note), general mature content (developer's content note).

SHE WAS 98 is a first-person psychological horror game for PC. As a grandson who moves in to care for his elderly grandmother, you keep up a routine of pills and quiet evenings in her decaying apartment, while her behaviour turns strange and something walks behind the walls at night.

About SHE WAS 98

SHE WAS 98 is a first-person psychological horror game by N4bA and Notex, released on Steam in January 2026. You play a young man whose grandmother, nearly a hundred years old, is living out her days in a once cosy apartment that has long fallen into disrepair. The rest of the family has drifted away, and the doctors talk of senile dementia. You come to look after her, and the game leaves open whether that is out of duty or because you hope the apartment will be yours when she dies.

It starts as a routine: pills by the hour, quiet evenings, dust and the smell of mothballs. Then she begins to act strangely. Sometimes she does not seem to recognise you, sometimes she looks at you as if you were someone else, and at night you wake to footsteps behind the wall that may not be hers. The makers describe it as a story of fear, self-interest and payback, where the line between victim and hunter blurs.

The developers call it a walking simulator with a deep story, realistic graphics and a tense atmosphere, and it is played alone. The rooms are drawn in close, realistic detail, from the plates on the kitchen table to the tiled bathroom, and most of the fear comes from darkness, sound and an old woman you can no longer read. Steam's content note warns of violence or gore.

It suits players who like slow, domestic horror built on a story, in the line of a family home that turns against you, rather than chases or combat.

How to play SHE WAS 98

  1. Arrive at your grandmother's apartment and learn the daily routine of caring for her.
  2. Give her pills on time and look after the apartment through the day.
  3. Explore the rooms in first person and pay attention to what changes.
  4. At night, follow the sounds you hear and move the story forward.

Tips

  • Play with headphones; the store stresses its sound, and footsteps behind the walls matter.
  • Watch how your grandmother looks at you and what she says, since her behaviour is the story.
  • Take your time in each room; it is a story-led walking simulator, not a race.
  • The minimum requirements list 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 3050, so check your PC first.
