About The Breach

The Breach is a Flash game by Berzerk Studio, released on Newgrounds in July 2010, where it was front-paged and placed third for the month. It still plays there in the browser through Newgrounds' Flash player.

The Hermes, a prototype starship, arrived in the orbit of G-54 and went silent. Sergei, head of security on G-54, goes aboard to find out what happened. The makers call it a horror adventure: you learn the ship's story as you go, fight horrible creatures, upgrade your character and collect stronger items.

It plays as a side-view platformer through the ship's metal corridors, lit by red warning lights, with gore when the creatures die. One player who came back to it years later remembers being afraid of every zombie, and of the flies when they appeared.

It suits players who like their horror with a gun in hand, in the line of Dead Space and the old space-marine games, and who want something free that runs in a browser tab.

How to play The Breach

1. Open the game's Newgrounds page and press the play button on the game.
2. Wait for it to load, then start a new game from its menu.
3. Move through the starship from the side, shooting the creatures that come at you.
4. Collect items and spend upgrades to make Sergei stronger as the ship gets worse.

Tips

• Play with sound on: the creatures are often heard before they are seen.
• Spend upgrades as you get them rather than saving them; later decks hit harder.
• If it loads slowly, turn on hardware acceleration in your browser, as Newgrounds' Flash player asks.
