One Night as Freddy was made by Uprank in Unity for the GMTK Game Jam 2023, whose theme was Roles Reversed. Its maker set out to give a faithful and fun twist on Five Nights at Freddy's: instead of the night guard, you control one of the original game's animatronics.

You see through the eyes of Freddy Fazbear as he roams the pizzeria from midnight onward, past the checkered walls, the pizza posters and the stage. The guard is in his office watching the cameras. The screen shows the time, a camera icon when you are being watched and a Guard Panic Level that rises as you get closer. Your goal is to reach the office and give him the scare.

The horror is the series' own, seen in reverse: the dark halls, the cameras, the slow approach and the jumpscare at the end, now with you as the thing in the corridor. Players find it smooth and a little easy, and the maker keeps a speedrun leaderboard, with the best runs under a minute.

It is free in the browser on itch.io, best played full screen, or as a Windows download. It suits Five Nights at Freddy's fans who have always wondered what the night looks like from the stage, and players of FNAF fan games like Bondee's Barnyard Safety Violation.

How to play One Night as Freddy

1. Open the game's itch.io page and press Run game, then go full screen; or download the Windows build.
2. Move Freddy through the pizzeria in first person.
3. Watch the camera icon: when it shows, the guard can see you.
4. Raise the guard's panic as you close in, and reach his office to win the night.

Tips

• Play full screen in the browser; the maker says the interface is cramped otherwise.
• Time your moves around the guard's cameras rather than rushing.
• Try the speedrun: the timer stops when you jumpscare the guard.
